Local site effects play a vital role in designing earthquake resistant structures. It has been known for many years that local geologic and soil conditions have considerable impact on the intensity of ground shaking and earthquake damage. It is observed that low magnitude earthquakes can bring upon considerable damage which is directly linked to the extent of amplification. The spatial dependence of amplification is attributed to the existing litho conditions as well as site effects, in particular. To cite some of the important parameters of strong ground motion, such as amplitude, frequency content and duration are greatly influenced by local site conditions. It can also be asserted that site effects have a profound impact in shaping the progressive seismic spectra, caused by occurrence of earthquakes.
